History Museum Graz - Schaudepot - Cultural History Collection

About the Project

The client, a public institution in the Austrian region, Styria, needed a fresh concept for the History Museum’s exhibitions and its entrance, housed within a significant historic building at Graz’s city center. The task was to present an enormous number of objects acquired since the Middle Ages and multimedia archives of the 20th century in an historic space that required careful treatment.
The concept is based on a journey through “Schaudepot,” an exhibition depot, divided into two parts – the Cultural History Collection and the Multimedia Collection. The first section presents the diversity of physical objects that reflects the use of industrial material with less customization while providing multifunctional and freely adaptable displays for various shapes and sizes allowing visitors to experience the historic space from an unexpected seamless perspective. The second part showcases multimedia archives enabling deep insights into the dispersed depot character with tailored scenography which leads through its genesis. The exhibition, “100 x Steiermark” placed in the outstanding historic mirror hall, articulates spatial intervention in both functional and artistic ways. Relating to the concept of a “laid table of history,” the furniture-like installations made of glass or mirror reflect the historic use of these chambers. The space, furniture, objects, and visitors merge into one another as one medium and raise questions: “What is forthcoming? What remains?”

What’s unique about it

The adaptation of the museum entrance required a solution that subtly enhance the entrance attraction of a previously very hidden and dark atrium. A custom iron “carpet” was laid over historic stone flooring with an aim to direct and offer a platform for exploration. The lighting installation above is created by Austrian artist Brigitte Kowanz.
The presentation of the depot includes 2000 objects of the cultural history and multimedia collections that have been placed in only 486 m² by using industrial, affordable cable trays that creates a continuous metal display wall. The flexible layer is gentle on the historic wall offering interspace for technical content behind it. The displays, enclosed with fine rope nets, generate a homogeneously infinite metal loop that unites the objects and space - offering a conscious contrast between content in the past and present. The customization was made simple for the employees with the adaptation of this standardized material for presentation needs.
The exhibition part, located in the historic mirror hall, consists of four connected rooms. The main task was to showcase 100 objects, which represent 100 episodes throughout the last 1000 years of the country’s history. The mirrored display allows multiple observation perspectives of the objects, contains all technical requirements and acts as an art piece itself, a metaphoric and formal reflection of the space, time and existence.
