About the Project

Chimney House takes its name from its remarkable 35-metre high minaret shaped chimney, added to the 1902 building in 1928, and restored during this yearlong project.
The project incorporates bold architectural interventions that honor the original structure of the heritage industrial space but add a cutting edge overlay. Extended with a contemporary upper level in steel, ceiling height amounts to 8,5m in the atrium, with skylight view to the old chimney and to the iconic shape of the historical building.
Everything was specially designed, from architectural interventions to interior details. Existing arched windows were extended to ground level and turned into steel framed glass doors; a dramatic U-shaped staircase in extruded aluminium divides the dining and living zones and open access to a private terrace. The generous double height void is accentuated by three 5m long custom designed pendant lamp made from Perspex discs and a skylight that has a direct view up the neck of the chimney.
Two bathrooms, two bedrooms with 4,5m high glass-panels facing the atrium and an open plan kitchen occupy the 200m2 guesthouse. The whole concept of the architectural detailing was conceived to honor the sense of the original space by creating a separation between the old and the new.
The hotel will become the third outpost of VIPP Hotel, immersive spaces available for short-term stays.

What’s unique about it

The transformation of the old water pumping station into the Chimney House turned an abandoned, out of use site into a rejuvenated area. It increases the value of the chimney itself giving new life to the heritage building.
Furthermore, the outdoor lighting scheme emphasizes the iconic shapes of the chimney providing a landmark for the local community.
Executed in respect of the site, the renovation was completed with high quality materials through expert craftsmanship techniques, in order to guarantee quality and durability for many years and for the bustle of guests.
The external landscape was conceived to have evergreen plants and a low maintenance garden.
The total renovation and extension followed the applicable energy requirements and standard parameters: insulation, energy efficiency label.
All the material – from a cast terrazzo, to the aluminum, to the custom metal handles, wall render – were chosen and developed for their durability.
