Visitors can sit on wooden benches placed deep amongst shimmering stainless-steel planters of herbaceous plants and tall olive trees.

About the Project

Extensive structural alterations permit the replacement of the east facing façade in favour of a colonnade structure that allows for direct views and access onto a newly landscaped roof terrace.

The terrace encourages users to take a step out of their usual place of work and into a wilder habitat. Visitors and employees sit on wooden benches placed deep amongst the shimmering planters of herbaceous plants and tall olive trees. A large terrazzo table is placed at one end of the terrace allowing for larger gatherings.

Varying sizes of meeting and presentation rooms ensures that the privacy requirements for the business are met. The auditorium with its terrace seating and state of the art AV facilities allows for informal gatherings in contrast to the larger and more conventional boardroom that enjoys a barrier free relationship with the terrace.

The central location of the lounge adjacent to the open plan kitchen enables Selfridges to hold functions throughout the year with direct access onto the new landscaped terrace. This is the perfect backdrop to entertain visiting brands.

The private offices reflect the individual characteristics of their owners. Each workspace is unique in its design and functionality and a comprehensive furniture package sourced by ACA ensures no two rooms are the same thus avoiding repetition.

Colourful interventions in the form of geometric shaped magnetic and pin-boards offer surprise and playfulness through the floor.

What’s unique about it

The building materials were carefully sourced for their environmentally sound credentials. Where possible, they were locally sourced in an attempt to reduce the carbon footprint of the project. Terrazzo was developed using waste aggregates with 0% VOCs biodegradable binders. Oak panelling was made using FSC certified and reconstituted veneer, the flooring is made using 100% British wool. The external stone of choice is British Portland.

A significant amount of design time was spent developing natural ventilation approaches reducing the reliance on the mechanical infrastructure.

The open plan interior encourages accessibility and interaction amongst all levels of Selfridges staff. Unusually the private offices are designed so that all staff members are free to use them when vacant ensuring a continuously productive working environment.

This workspace of intense detailing and fine workmanship showcases Selfridges as a global leader in producing exemplar design along with a positive and sensitive environmental approach.
