About the Project

Devised as a riff on the idea of ‘smart urban camping’, Moxy Times Square is anchored by flexible, vibrant spaces that spark a sense of community, connectivity and youthful vigor. Housed in a former turn-of-the-century hotel in New York’s garment district, the design concept for Moxy is built on a hand-wrought, crafted sensibility executed with thoughtful detailing, honest materials and basic, exposed construction techniques. These qualities layered together with a unique lightness and playfulness respond to the desires and expectations of today’s young-minded global nomad. Compact rooms are fitted out with custom furniture, fixtures and clever built-in design details that maximize the utility and comfort of private spaces. The overall guest experience is one of high flexibility and technical adaptability. Yabu Pushelberg-designed furniture includes foldable tables, chairs and stools which can be flattened and hung on a wall-peg system around the room’s perimeter. The multi-purpose fold-away furniture provides endless configuration and personalization options, based on the guests needs, allowing each individual to experience the same room in new and different ways. The bathroom design is reminiscent of a varsity bathing experience – with ceramic tiles kitted with tongue-in-cheek wordplay spelled out in mosaic wall tiles.

The custom peg system in each room allows guests to personalize their stay, and seamlessly transition the design of their room for work or play. The multi-purpose fold-away furniture provides endless configuration and personalization options, based on the guests needs, allowing each individual to experience the same room in new and different ways. Varying room types and configurations cater to the unique needs of youthful travelers while maximizing space and storage. The resulting guest experience is one of high flexibility and versatility. Custom wood-frame beds were engineered to maximize space and storage, to include roll- away storage beneath the bed; an uncommon in the typical hotel room, but key in making use of every available inch.

Inspired to create a dynamic, socially-driven environment, the arrival on the main level is open to a double-height atrium which offers a connection to the energy on the hotel’s sec- ond floor. No check in desk is required, as that transaction is replaced
