About the Project

Situated on Phetchaburi Soi 5, one of an epic cultural district in Bangkok, KLOEM HOSTEL is designed by preserving the essence. Approached as a renovation, additional elements are added to existing details. The renovation employs traditional Thai construction technique known as ‘house elevation’, essentially done by disengaging house’s main structure from foundation posts. After reinforcing original foundation with additional posts and columns, disengaged structure is reinstalled to new foundation whose height, stability and strength are increased, allowing further renovation to be carried out.

IF divides functional space of wooden houses to accommodate both private and dormitory rooms with maximum capacity of 32 guests, while proposed additional double height space defined by black steel structure acting as welcoming / recreation / dining area and also a transitional space that leads guests to upper level.

The integration of loft-like steel structure with these 2 existing wooden buildings which act as hint of the past and the present give KLOEM HOSTEL the right atmosphere and introducing Bangkok to visiting guests like the “good old folks” of the neighborhood would.

What’s unique about it

Architecturally speaking, the design of KLOEM HOSTEL is an attempt to preserve the building’s original characteristic under the more contemporary spatial program materialized to better corresponds with the new functionality. The renovation transforms the two simple-looking wooden houses, adding greater commercial and historical values to the once unappreciated pieces of architecture. The buildings now represent both the past and the present. They bring new conversations and introduce their visitors to learn and experience the true local way of life and the spirit of the neighborhood as the community’s ‘veterans’—the early settlers.

Nevertheless, apart from the architectural value, the design creates an impact in an urban scale through its new presence, which does not only help revive the spirit of the neighborhood, but also bring new business opportunities and commercial values to the surrounding area and community. Last but not least, it inspires people in the area to develop their own living spaces in a creative and sustainable way, as both a responsible community member and individual.
