About the Project

Buildings are made to be either large/small, or tall/low.
We wondered whether we could sincerely deal with this norm, and to create a space where the residents can behave freely and discover their own way of living.
The house resembles a large boulder, and its exterior is shaped according to the demands of interior and exterior functionalities. The interior spaces are composed of a triple-height void and a large staircase, and a group of rooms that contain various living functionalities.
Physical scale expands and contracts as one moves about the space, enabling them to freely choose how they want to use or relate to these spaces. Besides serving as a means of circulation, the staircase also function as a living room, bench, and theater stage on the lower steps to bring the family together three-dimensionally.
Every element, from the house itself to pieces of furniture, is treated equally using minimum materials and the same tiered shape to integrate as a single home. Through these operations, functionalities such as the living room and the benches are mixed into and augmented by the large staircase, creating a free space unencumbered by scale or activity.
The goal was to build a rich and fulfilling space using minimum materials and simple scale manipulation. It is an architecture which manifests the possibilities to expand the lives of the residents, with capacity for acceptance and spatial strength to remain the same.

What’s unique about it

A large staircase in the center of the building was designed to be a place for family to gather and connect. This provides multiple functions to the space in different scales creating various spaces for people to belong. By not separating these functions in a space, and instead integrating everything into one large staircase, it becomes an innovative and functional space. Its uses and relationship to the rest of the space can freely changed depending on the needs at the time.

The use of materials was planned to make each of them to stand out. The side surfaces of plywood are exposed in order to show material composition.
The same terraced composition of the large staircase was applied all over the building, such as the side surfaces of the floors, table and table legs, which gave a sense of architecture and furniture being treated equally. Everything was designed to be one large piece of integrated architecture by providing presence to the furniture, as if it has been there since the building was built.

The dining room that connects to outside when the entrance is opened resembles a café. An open space with air volume and light, created by the large staircase and clerestory window above it, has an atmosphere similar to a museum or a church. This approach of having different scales but still being a house provides sense of familiarity and divinity and creating a powerful sense of strength in this space.
