关于项目

The Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort was renovated to coincide with the 100th anniversary of De Stijl art movement. Tinker imagineers created and produced the multimedia concept of the museum - including two video installations - and a new interior design. Visitors follow Mondrian, pioneer of abstract art, on a journey along the cradles of his unique art.

The challenging premise was that most of the original works are in museums all over the world. The new display tells Mondrian’s life story through multimedia - modern, immersive and unique in the world in a way that is suitable for a broad and international audience.

The designers started the visitor journey with a video installation of Mondrian’s oeuvre. An audio-visual story takes the visitors from the artist's early landscapes and colourful seascapes to the abstract world that propelled him to fame. The imagery is accompanied by the contemporary music that he liked, from Ravel to jazz, from Stravinsky to boogie-woogie.

The second installation is about Mondrian’s last years, which he spent in New York. In this vibrating city he made a fresh start: he got rid of the black lines and explored new spaces in his work. He discovered that lines are planes in themselves and focused on movement. The American influence becomes clearer: boogie-woogie music, Disney films, and the city that never sleeps. Visitors enter Mondrian’s dream world, in which his work, the city, and his favourite music all melt together into one audio-visual immersive spectacle.

项目亮点

The multimedia concept represents a new approach to the use of film or video in museums. The carriers are part of the story themselves. In Works - the first installation - the video is projected onto a frame of lines and planes that in itself is exemplary of Mondrian’s work. When visitors enter the New York room - the second installation - they see a semitransparent cube with an illuminated frame. The cube represents the most abstract form of Mondrian’s studio, but this special carrier is also showing his inner and outer world, switching seamlessly between the two.

Eventually, the New York film leaves the canvas, enveloping the visitors and the room in an all-over immersive installation. To follow in the footsteps of the master, visitors get to visit his dreams. They see flashes from the world outside: brief, distorted, subjective and finally liberating. The squares are elongated into lines, run over the visitors, slide up the walls. The rhythmic interplay of forms takes over the entire room until the whole room is turned into a swinging and dancing field of squares, of which the visitors quite literally become a part of it! "Balance! Liberation! I’ve arrived," Mondrian would say.

To improve access to Europe’s heritage these two video-installations tell the story of Mondrian in pictures and music – two universal languages. They are unique, artistic creations that fit in with current times and at the same time do justice to history and the authentic body of thought of the master himself.
