关于项目

WeWork Weihai Lu is nestled in a turn of the century brick building; a former opium storage facility and artist residence. Working with WeWork's in-house design team, Linehouse celebrated the grandeur of the building, encapsulating the feeling of a grand hotel and transporting members on an unexpected journey of whimsy, voyeurism and festivity.

The existing site combines a historical building with industrial additions. The existing steel structure is painted ivy green, with a new black metal and stained OSB handrail leaner wrapping the triple-height space, allowing members to be spectators to the activities below.

A green steel staircase weaves through the circulation space. Clad in triangular oak pieces, one side painted in hues of blue, the alternating colours create a gradient of shifting views from wood to blue.

The central atrium is encased by the heritage façade. A curved terrazzo tray was used to define the space. Pastel diagonal strips create a hardscape carpet. A bronze structure above the terrazzo perimeter wall hangs mirrors, artwork, shelving and lighting. A bespoke lighting installation is suspended overhead.

项目亮点

Due to the unique nature of the building in Shanghai, the client wished to capture an elevated and grand atmosphere. We took reference from Shanghai’s belle époque era and played on the narrative of a grand hotel; from the concept of the concierge at the entrance, to a central grand public space where the bar is located. We wanted the material palette to evoke the feeling of festivity and refer to the context and history of the buildings, such as the terrazzo hardscape carpet and custom bronze work. In meeting rooms, festive custom wallpapers of geometric and interweaving patterns in pastel tones are hand-painted over in gold and green. Bathrooms feature custom patterned tiles
The central atrium was designed to be a flexible space for hosting events and the space successfully maintains a festive feeling when transitioning from day to night.
Two of the challenges of restoring this building were integrating the industrial additions and rectifying the disconnected circulation. The existing steel was a drab grey with an unsympathetic balustrade. Linehouse painted the existing steel structure ivy green, and inserted a new black metal and stained OSB handrail leaner, wrapping the triple-height space, allowing members to be spectators to the activities below.
The circulation was addressed by adding a central staircase and therefore two new bridges. The new green steel staircase weaves through the circulation space connecting all three levels.
